Questions We Get a Lot

Traditional robotic mowers require you to bury a physical perimeter wire around the entire lawn to define the cutting zone — a process that takes hours and becomes permanent. Wire-free models use GPS coordinates and sensor-based navigation to map boundaries digitally through an app. You draw the zone on a map, save it, and the mower holds to it without any ground-level installation.

Onboard sensors detect physical obstacles and redirect the cutting path in real time. The mower does not require you to pre-map each object — it responds to what it encounters. For permanent fixed features like raised beds or low walls, setting a tighter virtual boundary in the app is the more reliable long-term approach.

Most wire-free models include automatic return-to-base behavior when battery runs low, when signal is lost, or when the unit detects it has left the mapped area. Lift and tilt sensors also trigger an immediate blade stop as a safety measure. Check the specific model's app features for override and alert options.

Backyard Quantum offers 30-Day Returns on mowers — refer to the Return Policy for full details on condition requirements and the return process. Shipping back to us for returns outside of a defect claim is the customer's responsibility, so we recommend reviewing the coverage area specs against your measured lawn size before purchasing.

About Our Robotic Lawnmowers

A robotic lawnmower is a scheduled, autonomous cutting machine designed to maintain grass height without requiring the owner to operate it manually. The category exists because consistent, frequent mowing produces a healthier, more even lawn than weekly manual passes — and because the time cost of weekly mowing compounds over a season. The right machine for a given yard depends primarily on coverage area, yard geometry, and whether the installation approach fits the owner's willingness to work with buried wire or app-based boundary mapping. Wire-free navigation is the more recent engineering direction: it removes the permanent ground installation and allows boundary edits without physical changes to the yard. Slope rating, blade type, and rain-sensor behavior are the secondary specs that separate adequate performance from reliable performance. Buyers with complex yards — multiple zones, narrow corridors, or significant grade changes — should prioritize navigation logic over price. For straightforward rectangular lawns, coverage area and schedule flexibility are usually the deciding factors.
